Meltiades “Greek” Kousouros
Meltiades “Greek” Kousouros, age 78, of Rome, NY, entered into Eternal Glory on Tuesday, August 30, 2022 with his loving wife and family by his side. He was born on December 7, 1943, to the late Gabriel and Penelope Theodore Kousouros in Jamaica, Queens, NY. Mel graduated from Jamaica High School and went on to join the U.S. Air Force from 1962-1966; and was stationed at Griffiss AFB in Rome. Upon his military discharge, Mel remained in Rome, eventually joining the Rome Fire Department, retiring in 2003 after 29 years of dedicated service. An active, vibrant, man, Mel was an expert mechanic and carpenter, tackling any project with precision and passion; from remodeling his home, tending to his garden, and his culinary skills in the kitchen, including his “projects” for the last several years at his RV camp. There wasn’t a job or repair Mel was unwilling to take on.
On May 17, 2003, Meltiades married the love of his life, Lucy “LuLu” Marcello in Rome. Mel and Lucy enjoyed every moment together; a truly loving, caring, relationship. Their happiness was dependent upon each other. If you could describe Meltiades’ life in one word, it would be the word Sacrifice. He was selfless and giving, never wanting more than he needed. He was always there for his loved ones and friends, whether it be repairing a vehicle, plumbing, or carpentry; a helping hand in so many ways, giving his time with an open heart. Mel always made everyone feel welcome. Meltiades loved his Greek heritage, his family, his home, his garden, and his camp. A very spiritual man, Mel tithed to his Orthodox faith.
Meltiades “Greek” Kousouros is survived by his loving wife Lucy “Lulu”; a son Gabriel Kousouros, Rome; step-sons Edward Kozak and Richard Kozak; grandchildren Nick Bontempo (Francesca) of Fredrick MD, Arianna Kousouros and Amy Kousouros of Tampa FL, and Dino Kousouros of Rome; great-granddaughter Milana Bontempo; his sister, Mary Lichas of Singer FL; nephews Dennis (Elaine) Lichas, Andries Lichas of St. James NY; niece Penelope (James) Bedell, Nico Bedell and Nicki Bedell all of Manorville, NY. Meltiades was predeceased by his younger brother Athanatios Kousouros.
