John Camastra

John Camastra, 92, of Rome, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 7, 2020 at the Katherine Lutheran Home.

He was born in Staletti, Italy on October 15, 1927 and was one of five children born to Joseph and Mary Bevelacqua Camastra. He came to the United States with his family when he was two years old and settled in Rome, was educated in Rome schools and lived here his whole life. John proudly served his country in the US Navy until September 13, 1945 when he was honorably discharged.

John was united in marriage to Raffaelina Grillone on April 24, 1948 in St. John the Baptist Church, a blessed union of 72 years until her death on November 27, 2019. He was employed at GAFB as a carpenter until his retirement.

He was a professional boxing enthusiast and for a short time was a semi-pro boxer. John loved watching the NY Yankees and was a big fan.

John is survived by his beloved family, a daughter Mary Ann; a son and daughter-in-law Joseph and Rondy; a cherished granddaughter Sherianne Camastra; two sisters, Josephine Feole and Ida (Rocco) Griffo all of Rome; a brother Greg Camastra of Redding CA. and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother-in-law, Phil Feole; sister and brother-in-law, Rose and Mike Amuso; nephew James Amuso and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Frank and Carmella Corasaniti all of Rome.

Funeral services will be celebrated on Friday, October 9nd at 1:30 p.m.in St. John the Baptist Church for a Mass of Christian Burial with the Rev. Paul F. Angelicchio as celebrant. Those attending the Mass must wear a mask.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Bottini Funeral Home, 120 W. Embargo St.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in John’s memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959.
