David L. Smith
David L. Smith, 81, of Rome, unexpectedly passed away on Monday, January 8, 2024 at home.
David was born on July 3, 1942 in Harrisburg PA, the son of Junior Gering Smith and Irene Smith. He was a 1960 Graduate of Rome Free Academy and served in the US Navy from 1960-1964. On July 15, 1961 he married the love of his life Janet Houck in Oneonta, married 62 years. They are a true definition of absolute love and togetherness. They owned Smith Appliance for over 50 years until their retirement at the end of 2022. He truly enjoyed his work and was a wealth of knowledge. Together they both enjoyed almost daily breakfasts at the Country Kitchen with old and new friends. David enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was active with the Boy Scouts of America. He loved to tell stories and jokes about anything and everything. Above all he enjoyed spending time with his family. He was nothing short of a big kid himself and his grandchildren and great grandchildren brought out the best sides of him.
David is survived by his wife Janet; his daughter Becky Ferlo (Rick); his son David L. Smith Jr.; son-in-law Frank Ferlo Jr.; daughter-in-law Sandra Smith; grandchildren Frank Ferlo III, Samantha Ferlo (Daniel), Alexandria Ferlo-Bauer (CJ), Nathan and Christopher Smith; great-grandchildren Apple and Mila Fedele, Daniel and Mia Kinney and Maisy and Charlie Bauer. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother Jay Gering Smith.
At the request of the family, there will be no services or calling hours. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Bottini Funeral Home, 120 W. Embargo Street.
